Panel Lining Without the Fumes

Panel Lining Without the Fumes

One ink, one fine brush, no solvent smell in the room.

Panel lining is the single technique that turns a flat-painted kit into something that reads as a real machine, recessed lines picked out in a darker tone, catching shadow the way actual panel seams would. Most panel-lining products in this hobby are enamel or solvent based, chosen because they flow well and wipe away cleanly with mineral spirits. That is a fine trade if you do not mind the smell. If you do, it is the one technique acrylic has historically struggled to match.

INKredible closes that gap. It is formulated specifically for flow, thin enough to move into a recessed line by capillary action alone, pigmented enough that one pass is usually all you need.

What You Actually Need

Three things, an ink, a very fine brush, and a topcoat already on the model before you start. That last part matters more than people expect, panel lining directly onto raw ONECOAT or Layer paint risks lifting the base colour if you need to correct a line. A satin or matte topcoat first gives you a sealed surface to work on, and any correction is just a damp cotton bud away.

The Method
  1. 1 Seal the base coat. Apply Satin Varnish or Matt Varnish, 30ml, over your finished base colours before lining. This protects the paint underneath and gives the ink somewhere consistent to sit.
  2. 2 Load the brush lightly. A Crystal Kolinsky Sable Brush, size 00, holds enough ink to run a line without flooding it. Touch the tip to the panel line and let capillary action pull the ink along, do not drag it like you are painting a stroke.
  3. 3 Choose your ink tone deliberately. INKredible Black gives a hard mechanical line, good for most schemes. INKredible Umber gives a warmer, grime-toned line, better suited to weathered or rust-finished builds where a stark black line looks out of place.
  4. 4 Correct as you go. A cotton bud lightly dampened with water lifts excess ink cleanly off the sealed topcoat, no solvent needed.
  5. 5 Seal again if you are moving on to weathering. A second light coat of varnish locks the lining in before any further washes or pigments go on top.

Black is the default because it reads as a mechanical seam on almost any colour. But a black line on a weathered rust and bronze scheme can look like an outline rather than grime, which is why the Rust & Bronze Complete kit ships with INKredible Umber instead. If you are building your own scheme from individual colours rather than a starter set, it is worth choosing the ink tone the same way you would choose a shade paint, based on what the line is supposed to represent, not just what is darkest.

Where This Fits in Your Build Order

Base colours, then detail colours, then topcoat, then panel lining, then a final topcoat if you are weathering further. Skipping the first topcoat is the most common reason panel lining goes wrong, not the ink, not the brush, just an unsealed surface underneath it.

The short version. Seal the base coat, load the brush lightly, let the ink flow into the recess rather than dragging it, and pick black or umber based on what the line is meant to represent. Three steps and a fine brush get you the same result as a solvent-based liner, no fumes involved.

All the tools mentioned here are included in the Complete tier of every Robot & Mecha Starter Set, paired with the base colours and metallics for a specific scheme.

Better paint. Better price. No excuses.
