Drybrushing Fur: Four Layers From Bare Cloak to Frost-Bitten Pelt

A fur cloak is easy to paint if you let the brush do the work.

The Frost-Marked Warrior wears a fur cloak. Fur is one of the easiest textures to paint if you let the brush do the work, and one of the hardest if you try to paint every hair.

What Drybrushing Does

You load the brush, wipe almost all the paint off, and drag it lightly across the raised parts of the model. The paint catches only the high points and leaves the recesses dark. On fur, the high points are the tufts, so the texture does most of the work for you.

Use an old, stiff brush. Drybrushing wears brushes down, so do not use your best one.

The Four Layers
  1. 1 The base: Warm Grey 3. Paint the whole cloak with Warm Grey 3. Use two thin coats, not one thick one, so the folds and tufts stay sharp. Let it dry.
  2. 2 The drybrush: Warm Grey 1. Put a little Warm Grey 1 on your palette and load the tip of the brush. Wipe it on a paper towel until it leaves almost nothing, then brush lightly across the top of the cloak in short strokes. Build it up over several passes. Stop when the tufts stand out from the base.
  3. 3 The white tips: White. Do the same with White, with even less paint, and only on the highest tufts and the edge of the cloak. This is the brightest colour on the model, so keep it small.
  4. 4 The wash: Cool Grey. Brush Cool Grey from the Shades range into the recesses and let it settle as it dries. It pulls the drybrushed highlights back into the shadows and takes away the chalky look.
If It Goes Wrong
  • The highlight looks like a stripe. You have too much paint on the brush. Wipe it off again and go over it with lighter strokes.
  • Nothing shows. The brush is too dry, or the paint has dried on the palette. Add a little paint and try again.
  • It looks chalky. That is normal before the wash. Add the wash before you add more highlight.

The rule. Less paint than you think, more passes than you think.

What You Used
  • Base: Warm Grey 3 (Layers)
  • Drybrush: Warm Grey 1 (Layers)
  • Tips: White (Layers)
  • Wash: Cool Grey (Shades)
