12 Days of warcolours - Frost-Marked Warrior

Twelve paints, one miniature and a plan for painting it: one paint a day from 13 December, finished by Christmas Eve.

This is for anyone who wants to paint a miniature from start to finish without choosing the colours. You get twelve bottles that make a complete basecoat, highlight and shade job, and the Frost-Marked Warrior, a Wolf Knights on Foot miniature from Landor Miniatures. Build the miniature before 13 December, then open one bottle a day. I mix and bottle every paint by hand in Nicosia, and each label shows the paint's opacity.

Each bottle covers one step: base the cloth, leather, fur and chainmail; add two rounds of highlights; finish with two shade washes that tie the model together. The printed day-by-day guide is in the box, and the same guide is free on the warcolours academy.

The Workflow
  1. 1Before 13 December: build the miniature. Clean and assemble it. Don't paint yet.
  2. 2Day 1: undercoat. One even coat of Undercoat Grey over the whole miniature.
  3. 3Days 2-6: basecoats. Cloth, leather, fur, chainmail and hair, one bottle each, flat colour.
  4. 4Days 7-10: highlights. Cloth, fur and leather each climb one step brighter, ending with a white tip on the fur and hair.
  5. 5Days 11-12: shades. Two washes settle into the recesses. The miniature is finished when they dry.
  6. 6After Day 12: the voucher. The back cover of the printed guide has a code for 15% off your next order. One use, valid 12 months.

The pose is picked at random. Every box has one miniature from Landor Miniatures' Wolf Knights on Foot range.
